Street Fair

MIT community members and their families enjoyed food, fun, music, and entertainment for all ages, strolling down the festive street between tents filled with exciting things to see, do, and delight in, including:

  • Food trucks, carts, and stations offering a wide variety of free snacks and treats
  • Performances by MIT student groups and other artists
  • Displays and demonstrations from Institute departments, labs, centers, and projects
  • Rides, activities, and amusements including a carousel, swings, and retro video arcade games
  • Sand art, face-painting, balloon animals, Tim the Beaver, and more

We Are the Forest—Music of Resilience and Activism 

Fresh from their trip to the Brazilian Amazon, 80 gifted MIT musicians joined Grammy-nominated guest artists in a concert featuring hot and heartfelt music of Brazil and Puerto Rico. This consciousness-raising event included powerful and moving footage from Manaus, Brazil, where students connected with Amazonian scientists and indigenous musicians and communities, and, through the shared language of music, explored the value and urgency of cultural and environmental sustainability. On May 1 an all-MIT faculty panel, drawn from many different domains and backgrounds, explored this challenge in the context of sharing their exciting research in conjunction with their own experiences with creative breakthroughs. Read more

Inauguration Ceremony and Reception

An inauguration ceremony is not just the investiture of a president; it is the participation by an institution in the traditions of academe. Delegates from the worldwide academic community joined MIT faculty, students, staff, alumni, and trustees in the procession. Attendee enjoyed musical performances by MIT artists as the Institute welcomed and inaugurated its 18th president. Read more

Marc Cohn & Shawn Colvin: Together In Concert

MIT welcomed two of a generation's favorite singer-songwriters, Marc Cohn and Shawn Colvin, for a special inaugural celebration concert. Cohn, a Grammy Award winner for his soulful ballad "Walking in Memphis," and Colvin, winner of the Grammy Awards' Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Sunny Came Home,” invited the MIT community to join them for a night of songs and stories to close the festivities celebrating the inauguration of MIT’s 18th president.
